About BITE

Building Impact Through Eaters (BITE) is a nonprofit working to make climate-smart food choices the norm. BITE equips the people and institutions that shape food culture with the tools to make climate-smart choices the easy, appealing, and profitable ones, using narrative and behavioral design. Our methods have consistently proven that when food environments and communications are designed differently, eaters choose differently — without coercion, lectures, or lost revenue.

About Our Client’s Insights to Action Project

The Insights to Action project is part two of BITE's sustainability engagement with a large theme park (client) in Southern California. BITE is leading three phases of research (details below), co-developed with the Culinary Institute of America, including a pilot to test and measure the impact of menu and choice architecture interventions.

The Role

The Data Analyst is the embedded data lead for the Insights to Action project, working on-site with the client sustainability team (80%) and remotely with the BITE team (20%). The Data Analyst collaborates closely with culinary professionals, BITE researchers, and external data partners to design instruments, collect data, and translate findings into clear, actionable insights that inform how the program is designed and how best to scale.

Core Responsibilities

Phase 1 | Chef Change Management Assessment
  • Co-design and program mobile-friendly survey instruments used to assess readiness, motivation, and barriers across culinary and front-of-house teams.
  • Recommend a sampling approach calibrated to the chosen scope of culinary roles and dining locations.
  • Coordinate fielding logistics on-site, including outreach, reminders, and response tracking to hit target response rates.
  • Lead the quantitative analysis of survey responses and validate survey findings with previously-conducted qualitative interviews.
Phase 2 | Custom Chef Engagement & Certification Program
  • Design and analyze short pre/post reflection instruments (2–3 questions, mobile-friendly) embedded in each chef engagement module.
  • Track proposed menu change submissions and synthesize patterns across hero dishes, sustainability elements, choice architecture interventions, and staff engagement.
  • Manage handoff of recipe inputs to major emissions database (HowGood) for sustainability analysis and concepts to food and beverage market research firm (Datassential) for consumer testing.
  • Integrate all outputs back into program decisions.
Phase 3 | Test & Learn: Single-Site Pilot & Impact Measurement
  • Lead the day-to-day execution of the impact measurement plan during the 4–8 week single-site pilot, working hand-in-hand with the client team.
  • Coordinate with culinary, marketing, and front-of-house teams to ensure interventions (menu language, signage, choice architecture) are implemented consistently and data is captured cleanly.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for data questions during the pilot.
  • Capture and quality-check baseline and pilot data, flagging anomalies in real time.
  • Analyze data to measure changes in sales and menu mix, guest satisfaction indicators, site-specific kg CO2e using HowGood, and chef satisfaction and engagement.
  • Build and maintain a dashboard and summary report that provides a clear, near-real-time view of tracked metrics.
  • Translate findings into clear, actionable insights for the final deliverable and for a BITE case study.

Cross-Phase Responsibilities

  • Serve as the BITE team’s on-site lead for pilot data collection and analysis.
  • Recommend and configure data collection tools (mobile-friendly surveys, POS data extracts) appropriate to the on-site environment.
  • Maintain clear data documentation, version control, and reproducible analysis workflows.
  • Conduct regular check-ins with BITE researchers and the Director of Programs.
  • Identify gaps in data collection or analysis processes and propose practical, field-tested solutions.
  • Document lessons learned to inform future BITE engagements and scaling.
  • Support the client’s evaluation of sustainability work contracted with other partner organizations using consistent data and measurement standards.

Minimum Requirements

  • 2–4 years of behavioral science experience in quantitative research, data analysis, or applied research, ideally in nonprofit, hospitality, foodservice, sustainable food systems, or consumer behavior.
  • Experience designing and fielding mobile-friendly surveys in Qualtrics, including sampling strategy and response-rate management (preferred).
  • Proficiency in statistical methods (descriptive statistics, regression, ANOVA) and data visualization using R Programming.
  • Strong attention to detail with experience creating reproducible analysis workflows.
  • Ability to translate quantitative findings into recommendations for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with Scope 3 emissions accounting, preferably in the Food & Beverage or Agriculture sector.
  • Experience building and maintaining dashboards that combine multiple data sources.
  • Experience cleaning and quality-checking foodservice data such as POS data, sales, and menu mix.

Work Culture Requirements

  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, embedded on-site environment.
  • Growth mindset and comfort with evolving projects and client requirements.
  • Ability to manage responsibilities across both BITE and the client organization.

Why BITE?

We work with the people who shape what we eat—the largest, most influential foodservice operators—to shift perceptions and make climate-smart food choices the norm. You'll be working with a major brand on an exciting project at the intersection of food culture, behavioral science, and climate action. BITE is small enough that your voice shapes the work and established enough that the work has reach.

Benefits

  • Hybrid work schedule with 2 days per week at the client site in Anaheim, California.
  • Generous paid time off, including a two-week office closure at year-end.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
